On Your Own Terms

So, Trent Reznor loves Rush!  Coincidentally, so do we.  I also love Nine Inch Nails.  In my last post I mentioned that The Cure is my all time favorite band, which is true.  Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails are tied for a close second.  Oddly, Rush barely makes my top 5 but that’s another story.  I’ll write something about Depeche Mode some other time too.

In the video you will see Jian Ghomeshi and Mr. Reznor talk about the new HTDA album Welcome Oblivion, amongst other things.  I hung on Trent’s every word.  Having had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Reznor in 2009 it seems like there is a connection between him and I.  The connection is total fantasy of course, I mean I shook his hand and he signed my 1991 Lollapalooza ticket.  But still, the dark performer who created Nine Inch Nails is, in this video, more approachable and open than I could have ever imagined. He talks about past successes, failures, addiction, music, film, money, business and life in general.

I encourage you to watch it in its entirety whether you’re a budding musician, business person, casual laborer, or unemployed.  There are some lessons in there about doing things your own way, without compromise; something I wish I could say I have remained true to. Sadly this is not the case, but it’s never too late to learn from your past mistakes.

This is what Hello Companion is all about.  Our music, on our terms. We, of course, hope you identify with a lyric, or a riff, or even an entire song.  In the end, however, we put our music out there because we love it, and we’re sure you will too!

I too used to air-drum to YYZ. Still do!
